World Champion Cardinals cheering on Blues

And with the Cardinals playing a 12:05 p.m. start against the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium, a night game at Scottrade Center would mean McClellan and several of his teammates could make the eight-block journey to see some playoff hockey.

And that’s exactly what happened, allowing McClellan to reserve a 20-person suite for most of his teammates to attend the 6:30 p.m. series opener between the Blues and Kings later that night.

“They are excited,” McClellan said. “People have been talking about it ever since I asked about it in Chicago when I knew the times lined up. People have been really excited about it. Some guys are going to their first game. For me, it’s my first playoff game ever.”

Among the players planning to attend are David Freese, Carlos Beltran, Rafael Furcal, Daniel Descalso, Lance Lynn, Mitchell Boggs, Jason Motte, Fernando Salas and Victor Marte. It will be the first hockey game ever for both Beltran and Furcal.

Avid Blues fan Chris Carpenter, who attends several home games during the Cardinals’ offseason, plans to take in the game as well.

McClellan became friends with Blues captain David Backes after the two were paired during a charity gold tournament run by Albert Pujols a few years back. McClellan is also close with St. Louis native Cam Janssen, who played four seasons with the hometown Blues before joining the New Jersey Devils this season.
